GDS
Definition updated April 2026
What is a GDS?
A GDS (Global Distribution System) is a centralized network that connects travel service providers - airlines, hotels, car rental companies - with travel agencies and booking platforms, enabling real-time distribution of inventory, pricing, and reservation capabilities.
The three major GDS networks are Amadeus, Sabre, and Travelport. Historically, access to a GDS was the only way for travel agencies to see and book inventory from multiple providers. The GDS became the central nervous system of the travel industry.
Modern travel APIs and OTAs have made it easier for developers to access comparable inventory without direct GDS connectivity, which traditionally required expensive contracts and technical certification.
