Public API

Definition updated April 2026

What is a public API?

A public API is an API that is openly available for external developers to access, either for free or through a commercial subscription. It is documented, has a published endpoint, and provides a stable interface for building integrations. Most APIs on RapidAPI are public APIs.

Public APIs are the foundation of the API economy - they enable third-party developers to build products on top of an existing platform's data or functionality without needing internal access. Public APIs must maintain backward compatibility, provide documentation, and handle the operational demands of many concurrent consumers.

The 'public' in public API refers to accessibility, not cost. A public API may still require authentication, subscriptions, or commercial terms. The distinction from a private API is about whether external parties can access it at all.
