Rate Shopping
Definition updated April 2026
What is rate shopping?
Rate shopping is the practice of systematically comparing hotel room prices across multiple booking channels - the hotel's own website, OTAs, and metasearch engines - to identify the best available rate or to monitor competitive pricing.
For developers, rate shopping tools are built on travel data APIs that return pricing from multiple channels in a single query, enabling side-by-side comparisons. A rate shopping dashboard might monitor prices for a list of competitor hotels and alert when prices change significantly.
Consumers also benefit: comparing prices across Priceline, Booking.com, and Hotels.com for the same property and dates frequently reveals meaningful differences. Travel apps that surface these comparisons automatically save users time and money.
