Data Science
Definition updated April 2026
What is data science?
Data science is an interdisciplinary field that uses statistical methods, machine learning, and domain expertise to extract knowledge and value from data. Data scientists build predictive models, discover patterns in large datasets, and design experiments to test hypotheses.
Data science work begins with data acquisition - often from APIs or datasets - and progresses through exploration, cleaning, feature engineering, model building, validation, and deployment. Each step depends on the quality and completeness of the input data.
For data science teams, APIs and datasets from providers like HappyEndpoint reduce the time spent on data acquisition and cleaning. Access to labeled, normalized, real-world data - like sold property transaction records with price, location, and property attributes - enables model training that would otherwise require months of custom data collection.
