Licensed Data
Definition updated April 2026
What is licensed data?
Licensed data is data provided under a formal agreement that specifies the permitted uses, restrictions, duration, and fees. Unlike open data (free for any use) or scraped data (no formal agreement), licensed data comes with explicit terms governing what you can and cannot do with it.
When you subscribe to a data API on RapidAPI, you are accepting a data license - the terms of use of that API. These terms typically permit use in your application but restrict redistribution, reselling, or reverse engineering the underlying data.
Understanding data licensing is essential for production applications. Using licensed data outside the permitted scope can expose your organization to legal liability. Always review the terms of service for any API or dataset you use in production, and retain records of your subscriptions and usage terms.
