Proprietary Data

Definition updated April 2026

What is proprietary data?

Proprietary data is data owned exclusively by a specific organization - collected through its own operations, systems, or relationships - and not publicly available or accessible to competitors. It represents a competitive moat: because others cannot replicate it, it creates durable differentiation.

Examples of proprietary data include Bayut's exclusive property listing database in the UAE, Rightmove's full UK property transaction history, and Sephora's internal product catalog with granular SKU-level attributes. These organizations have built their proprietary datasets through years of platform operations.

Accessing proprietary data through APIs and datasets is the mechanism through which developers can leverage another organization's data assets without collecting the data themselves. The licensing terms of these APIs define what you can do with the data - it remains proprietary to the provider even when you access it.
