What is MSRP?

MSRP (Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price) is the price that a product manufacturer recommends retailers sell the product at. It serves as a reference price point - retailers can sell above, at, or below MSRP.

In retail data APIs, MSRP is commonly returned alongside the current selling price to enable discount calculation. If an API returns price: 79.99 and msrp: 129.99, the implied discount is 38%. Price comparison and deal discovery tools use MSRP as a benchmark to determine whether a product is genuinely discounted.

MSRP is most meaningful for branded products where the manufacturer sets a consistent reference price. For commodity or private-label products, MSRP may not be set or may not be a reliable baseline.
